The Public Disclosure Commission has identified 12 candidates who appear to have missed the Oct. 15 deadline for mandatory pre-general election spending reports.
“This is information that it’s imperative that the voters know before they vote,” said Commission Chair Allen Hayward. “When I see … people running for superior court judge that aren’t complying with the reporting laws and people who are running for the Washington state Legislature, or county commission … this is our purpose, this is the reason we exist, to get this kind of information to the voters before they vote. They’d better get right with us, or they better have some explanation for the voters.”
State law requires candidates who are participating in the general election and registered under full reporting (required for those who raise and spend more than $7,000) to file expenditure reports—known as C-4 reports— 21 and 7 days prior to the general election days regardless of campaign activity. Reports are also due on the tenth day of the month following the election.
The next mandatory reporting deadline is today, Oct. 29.
Reports on spending leading up to an election are a crucial part of the PDC’s mission to accurately track campaign financing in Washington. Improving compliance with mandatory expenditure reporting deadlines is one of the Commission’s strategic goals.
The pre-general election report due on Oct. 15 covered campaign spending during the period between Sept. 1 and Oct. 14. The PDC maintains a list of filing deadlines and other reporting resources on its website, and candidates and campaigns receive email notification of upcoming filing dates.
The candidates below were alerted Friday to the pending publication of their names and asked to submit the reports or explain why they didn’t need to file. As of the time of this release, the following still appeared to be missing the required report:
