Are there laws governing political ads?

Yes. Sponsor identification is required for political advertising, with some exceptions. See more information about sponsor identification requirements.  

Additionally, regulations govern descriptions of candidates in ads and prohibit false advertising, among other limitations. Learn more with our political advertising guide.    

Campaigns must report spending on political advertising in detail in expenditure reports (C-4). The committee may also need to report ads as independent expenditures.
